      क्रांतिकारी मंगल पाण्डेय  का  जन्म 19 जुलाई, 1827 को उत्तर प्रदेश के  अयोध्या  ज़िले में हुआ था। इनके पिता  का  नाम दिवाकर पांडे तथा माता का नाम श्रीमति अभय रानी था। वे कोलकाता के पास बैरकपुर की सैनिक छावनी में "34वीं बंगाल नेटिव इन्फैंट्री" की पैदल सेना के 1446 नम्बर के सिपाही थे। भारत की आज़ादी की पहली लड़ाई अर्थात 1857 के संग्राम की शुरुआत उन्हीं के विद्रोह से हुई थी।   जन्म तारीख और  गाँव  :-  उनका जन्मस्थल  अयोध्या  की  बलिया  तहसील के सुरहुरपुर ग्राम (अब ज़िला अम्बेडकरनगर का एक भाग) बताया गया है। इन सन्दर्भों के अनुसार  अयोध्या (  बलिया  तहसील ) के   नगवां  के मूल निवासी पण्डित दिवाकर पाण्डेय सुरहुरपुर स्थित अपनी ससुराल में बस गये थे।  कैसे हुई संग्राम की शुरुआत :- 1857 के संग्राम की नीव उस समय पड़ी जब सिपाहियों को 1853 में एनफील्ड पी 53 नामक बंदूक दी गई. यह बंदूक पुरानी और कई दशकों से उपयोग में लायी जा रही ब्राउन बैस के मुकाबले में शक्तिशाली और अचूक थी. नयी एनफील्ड बंदूक भरने के लिए कारतूस को पहले दांतों से काट कर खोलना पडता था और उसमें भरे हुए बारुद को
